Retro Rock is an educational resource of 10
play-along songs for upper primary and junior secondary music. There is
a CD, scores (untuned and 4-part tuned for C, Bb, &
Eb), and teachers information booklet with style histories and photos.
The styles are less obvious rock music styles, like Ska, Hip Hop, Art
Rock and so on which means that Retro Rock would complement existing
rock music resources not compete with them. The performance parts range
in difficulty from novice to lower intermediate band levels, and
because there are also untuned percussion parts it can be used with
mixed ability groups such as classroom music ensembles. Retro Rock
makes playing music accessible and fun, as well as being an easy
introduction to music reading, the elements of style, and contemporary
music history.
Retro Rock is designed to be a flexible music
education resource. While the focus of the package is upon performing
music the purpose of these 'alternative styles' is to help pose the
question 'what is style in music?' and 'what makes one style different
from others?' There are many resources available that deal directly
with the 'classic' rock forms and we have authored and composed several
packages of this nature, with Retro Rock we wanted to emphasise the use
of rock music more specifically to educate students about musical style
itself
